Alright so for starters. I can't really ever say that I had that much faith in it when it was revealed that Batman V. Superman would be the start of the DC expanded universe culminating in the Justice League. I thought it felt like an attempt to keep up with Marvel (which it is). It also took a major hit when I saw Batman V Superman and felt it was horrible. Also to be fair, this may be the movie that made me lose whatever faith I have left in it but that said, Suicide Squad wasn't an utterly terrible movie. Well okay, it was bad but there's a difference between bad and terrible. To get further into it, I will start with the non-spoiler review:
Non-Spoiler:
So trying to think of some good things to say...let me see.
The plot was lax and predictable...no...that's not it.
Marvel made a better version of anti-heroes that get out of prison to form a team and fight evil called Guardians of the Galaxy. No still not it.
The movie at times forgot that it was supposed to be a movie and got caught up in drawn out character flashbacks...No that's not it.
The movie apparently disbelieves the audience's ability to be able to figure things out from clues or have any idea of what's going on without expressly telling us what is going on. No that's not it either.
The movie at times forgets that it's supposed to have a plot and instead goes for supposed to look cool action shots that mostly fail...no...hang on I'll get it eventually.
The character flashbacks mostly felt clumsy and poorly done...Dang almost had it.
The Joker and Harley felt more like people cosplaying as Joker and Harley than the actual Joker and Harley. No...I think I'm actually getting colder now.
It was at least better than Batman V. Superman. Ah that's it. Let's see any more...no...
Okay now for the spoilers:
Spoiler version:
Issues:
1. Deadshot was really cliche I thought. Here we have the traditional set up. Guy who shoots things better than anyone else making him a complete badass but it gets even more cliche. He's a merciless hitman who never misses except that one time when you know he's going to miss intentionally because apparently he doesn't kill women or children...to make him more likeable. Oh and he has the cliche family soft spot for his daughter that the prison has been withholding letters from which just so happens to be the reason he gets caught and sent to prison anyway.
2. The cliches dont end there though. You also have the cliche asshole prison guard or prison related officer also present in such movies as: Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Guardians of the Galaxy, Orange is the New Black, O Brother Where Art Thou and pretty much any other movie that features a prison. Not to mention the cliche role call character back ground that they actually extended into a long montage...uggh.
3. The song set was very uninspired. House of the Rising Sun to introduce the prison. Yeah, that's never been done before...Sympathy for the Devil to introduce and asshole if not evil character...boring. Spice it up please. Make some courageous choices.
4. The villain Enchantress wasn't really fleshed out at all. I mean you can make the same argument for some of the marvel movies but I did feel their motivations if not personality for the most part in marvel. I didn't really feel much personality from either of the main two villains.
5. Copouts: Superman isn't really dead guys. And guess what neither is Dr. June Moon (I don't know if that's her actual DC name but it sucks either way) or the Joker cosplayer.
6. The only death (that matters) was actually one of the characters I kind of liked and wanted to see flushed out better, Diablo.
7. For all the time devoted to character development, they really only got much background into Diablo, Harley and Deadshot. I mean I understand that they don't have time to get into all of them but when they spend that much time setting them up....yeah I expected more or at least better.
8. Harley is crazy on the outside but deep down all she wants to do is settle down and have a nice peaceful life with Mr. J as he settles into a corporate career and they have kids in complete conformity...
9. A mind-reading villain couldn't see that Harley Quinn's "I'm gonna join you" routine was a trick to get close enough to weaken her...yeah.
10. Beyond the big three and a little bit into Katana, there really was very little character development. I said this before but it warrants repeating. Dr. June Moon and Flag were an archaeologist and soldier (respectively) who fell in love for...reasons. Oh and Flag hates Deadshot for being a merc. The Joker was there...because Harley was there pretty much. Killer Croc was just an underwhelming guy (okay I know I said that bigger would be impractical elsewhere but I really didn't get how small he looked) who talked a bit like Michael Clarke Duncan's character from the Green Mile. Possibly the most egregious though. Captain Boomerang who was pretty much there to act as the guy who didn't play well with the team so you could see him manipulate another person into getting killed to test their kill collars and then repeatedly state how he wants to get out of there until he's finally given the chance and does only to come back and fight in the final battle for who knows why. The writers just needed him there for that final scene.
11. Getting back to the movie not trusting the audience: *Katana talks to her sword like an ex-lover, like the husband they earlier mentioned she lost and how her sword traps souls within it.* Flag: "Her husband's soul is in that sword." Yes Flag, I kind of understood that. Enchantress: (to Waller(sp?)) Show me how to defeat your armies." Waller: "I won't tell you." Enchantress: "No worries I will just use these things to tap into your mind and learn all of your secrets." Later in the movie. Military officer: "How does she know about that? Its a secret location." Movie: "Remember how Enchantress was reading Waller's mind to figure out military secrets? We're showing that to you now!"
12. False advertising: The movie depicted in the trailers was funner more light hearted. This movie wasn't nearly as dark as Batman V. Superman or Man of Steel but it was a much more stoic atmosphere than what the trailers depicted.
Positives:
1. The acting overall was pretty good I thought. I may not have liked the portrayals of Harley or Joker but I thought the actors did a good job for what they were given.
2. I can argue all day that Deadshot was cliche but I do admit that type of character hits a soft spot for me so it wasn't a complete waste of time on him.
3. Did I mention it was better than Batman v. Superman?
So really, it wasn't a terrible movie. I probably made it sound much worse than it was. It just was a somewhat bad movie and it changed my opinion of things from when I went in. Before movie: "Oh that trailer for Wonder Woman looks cool." After the movie: "At least the trailer for Wonder Woman looks decent but DC's failed twice and you know, the Suicide Squad trailer looked cool too. so yeah. It will probably suck."
